How to Run a More Profitable Trade Business

Improve the way you price, schedule and review work so more of your effort contributes to a sustainable trade business.

Start with the real cost of each job

Revenue is not the same as profit. Before accepting a job, account for labour, materials, travel, equipment, subcontractors and the time spent quoting, ordering and following up. A job that looks attractive on the quote can lose margin when those less visible hours are ignored.

Record an estimate before work starts, then compare it with what actually happened. The aim is not perfect bookkeeping on every call-out; it is spotting repeat patterns, such as travel taking longer than planned or a particular type of work needing more preparation.

  • Write down the scope, assumptions and exclusions before work begins.
  • Track labour and material changes as variations rather than relying on memory.
  • Review completed jobs regularly and update future estimates when your assumptions were wrong.

Protect the time that earns and supports the work

A full calendar is not automatically a healthy business. Leave realistic travel and preparation time, group nearby work where practical, and reserve a predictable block for quotes, invoices and customer follow-up. This reduces the chance that essential office work is repeatedly pushed into evenings.

Use a consistent process from enquiry to invoice. Capturing customer details once, linking them to a job and keeping the quote and invoice together makes it easier to see what still needs attention.

Use a short review to decide what to improve

At the end of each month, look at jobs won, jobs lost, time spent on administration, overdue invoices and the kinds of work that produced the most reliable return. Make one practical change at a time, then check whether it helped. Get advice from your accountant for tax, pricing and cash-flow decisions specific to your circumstances.

Keep the workflow visible

A job board, calendar, customer list and quote and invoice records can make the next action easier to find. AutoTradie brings those everyday records into one trade-business workspace; it does not replace professional accounting advice or guarantee a particular profit result.
